In Iraq, TDH Italy implements humanitarian and development programmes aimed at strengthening protection systems, improving access to essential services, and promoting the well-being and dignity of vulnerable populations.
Position Summary
TDH Italy is seeking a qualified and experienced Psychologist to provide specialized psychological and psychosocial support to vulnerable children, women, and girls, including survivors of or individuals at risk of violence.
The Psychologist will conduct psychological assessments, provide individual and group counselling, develop appropriate support plans, facilitate specialized referrals, and follow up on the psychological well-being of individuals receiving services.
All services must be delivered in accordance with confidentiality, informed consent, Do No Harm, child safeguarding, survivor-centred care, and the best interests of the child.
Main Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Protection Officer/Project Manager, the Psychologist will:
- Conduct confidential psychological assessments for children, women, and girls referred to TDH Italy’s services.
- Develop individualized psychological support plans based on identified needs, risks, strengths, and available resources.
- Provide individual psychological counselling to children, adolescents, women, and girls.
- Facilitate structured group counselling and psychosocial support sessions when appropriate.
- Provide psychological first aid and crisis support to individuals experiencing acute distress.
- Apply age-appropriate, child-friendly, gender-sensitive, and survivor-centred approaches.
- Support individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, family difficulties, or other psychological concerns within the scope of professional competence.
- Identify individuals requiring psychiatric, medical, or other specialized services and facilitate safe and timely referrals.
- Assess and respond appropriately to serious risks, including self-harm, suicide, abuse, exploitation, and immediate protection concerns, according to TDH Italy’s procedures.
- Develop safety and support plans in coordination with individuals, caregivers, and relevant case workers when appropriate.
- Coordinate closely with Case Workers and other protection staff while maintaining professional confidentiality.
- Provide technical guidance to Case Workers and psychosocial facilitators on psychological well-being and appropriate communication with distressed individuals.
- Conduct awareness sessions for individuals, families, and communities on mental health, stress management, positive coping mechanisms, and available support services.
- Regularly follow up on the progress and well-being of individuals receiving psychological support.
- Obtain informed consent and, when working with children, informed assent and caregiver consent when safe and appropriate.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, secure, and updated records of assessments, sessions, referrals, and follow-up actions.
- Prepare weekly and monthly activity reports without disclosing personally identifiable or confidential information.
- Participate in case conferences, technical meetings, supervision sessions, training, and capacity-building activities.
- Contribute to the development or adaptation of psychological and psychosocial tools, session plans, and awareness materials.
- Respect professional boundaries and avoid creating dependency between service providers and individuals receiving support.
- Comply with TDH Italy’s Code of Conduct, safeguarding, Child Protection, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), and data-protection policies.
- Perform other relevant duties assigned by the direct supervisor within the scope of the position.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from a recognized university.
- Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, or a related specialization is strongly preferred.
- Valid professional licence or authorization to practise in Iraq, where applicable.
- Minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in psychological counselling or mental health and psychosocial support.
- Demonstrated experience providing psychological support to children, adolescents, women, or survivors of violence.
- Previous experience working with national or international NGOs is strongly preferred.
- Sound knowledge of trauma-informed care, psychological first aid, crisis intervention, and psychosocial support.
- Good understanding of child development, child safeguarding, survivor-centred care, confidentiality, and informed consent.
- Ability to identify and appropriately respond to serious psychological and protection risks.
- Strong assessment, counselling, active-listening, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully with children, women, girls, caregivers, and vulnerable individuals.
- Non-judgmental attitude and commitment to dignity, non-discrimination, and Do No Harm principles.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and reporting skills.
- Good computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and electronic recordkeeping.
- Fluency in spoken and written Arabic is required.
- Working knowledge of English is preferred.
- Knowledge of mental health and protection referral services available in Baghdad is an advantage.
