Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) has been working in Iraq for more than 20 years. IRW-Iraq was amongst the few aid agencies those were on the ground since 2003. Islamic Relief Worldwide Iraq is implementing several projects in the sector of livelihoods, WASH, Education, and Protection

 

JOB PURPOSE:

The Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of Islamic Relief Iraq (IR-Iraq) staff, visitors, and materials within Halabja and to other operational areas when needed. The role includes basic vehicle maintenance, adherence to road safety protocols, and logistical support during field activities, all in compliance with IRW's policies and humanitarian standards.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

Generic responsibilities:

 

  • Comply with IRW and donor vehicle usage and safety policies.
  • Ensure responsible fuel consumption and proper maintenance of assigned vehicles.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous manner with all staff, beneficiaries, and partners.

 

Specific responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure timely, safe, and professional transportation of IR-Iraq staff, visitors, goods, and official documents to and from designated locations, following approved movement plans and security guidance.
  • Conduct routine vehicle inspections before and after each trip—checking fuel, oil, water, brakes, lights, tires, and other vital components. Report mechanical issues or service needs promptly to the line manager.
  • Keep the assigned vehicle clean, well-maintained, and presentable, both internally and externally, and ensure it is fueled and ready for immediate use.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date transport records, including vehicle logbooks, trip records, fuel usage logs, and mileage reports, in full alignment with IRW’s transport and audit procedures.
  • Comply fully with local traffic laws, speed limits, and IRW’s internal transport policies, including the driver code of conduct and standard operating procedures.
  • Immediately report any accidents, security incidents, breakdowns, or near misses, and follow the incident reporting protocol with proper documentation.
  • Provide logistical and operational support during field missions, including loading/unloading materials, delivering equipment to project sites, and assisting with events, distributions, and training sessions.
  • Ensure the vehicle always carries valid legal documents (registration, insurance, permits) and is equipped with essential safety tools such as a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, spare tire, and basic repair tools.
  • Avoid high-risk areas and implement safe routing practices. Be prepared to support emergency relocation or evacuation of personnel or materials when needed.
  • Collaborate with the program, MEAL, and logistics teams to plan and execute field movements efficiently, maintaining professionalism when dealing with community members, stakeholders, and local authorities.
  • Represent Islamic Relief in a respectful and ethical manner, reflecting the organization’s values of fairness, humanity, honesty, and integrity.
  • Follow and uphold Islamic Relief’s safeguarding and protection policies, including child protection and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA).
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to IRW operations, projects, and beneficiaries.
  • Be flexible to work on a rotational shift basis, including:
    • 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.
    • 04:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
    • 12:30 a.m. to 08:30 a.m.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  1. EDUCATION/TRAINING

Required:

  • Minimum Diploma certificate or equivalent

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience, preferably with an NGO or humanitarian agency.
  • Familiarity with Halabja, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and surrounding areas is essential.
  • Experience working in complex or high-pressure environments is an asset.

 

Professional Qualifications

  • Valid Iraqi driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to understand basic English and Arabic.
  • Availability for flexible working hours, including weekends and night shifts.
