Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, humanitarian, non-governmental organisation providing assistance to people in need as a result of natural and man-made disasters, irrespective of race, religion, ideology or politics. We are seeking to employ a candidate for the following position:

Main Purpose:

Providing psychological support to patients according to MSF principles, standards, and procedures in order to improve the patients’ mental health.

 

Accountabilities:  

  • Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. Informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient's condition.
  • Implementing the Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol, identifying possible victims of SGBV and referring them to the medical team so that they receive the necessary treatment.
  • Providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family, group) to patients according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions.
  • Assisting and training staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities. Working in close collaboration with translators in order to ensure appropriate terminology and behavior during sessions.
  • Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities
  • Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective.
  • Ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential.

 

MSF SwissContext Specific Accountabilities:

 

  • Establishing a strong relationship of trust with patients belonging to a very vulnerable populaiton, encouraging them to talk about issues they cannot normally share with others reinforcing confidentiality?, actively listening to their concerns, showing empathy, accepting without bias the issues raised; helping patients towards a deeper understanding of their concerns, challenging inconsistencies in what they says or do, setting goals for the treatment together, helping them making decisions and choices regarding possible ways forward, and monitoring/evaluating the process.
  • Discussing challenges, difficulties and risks (g. suicidality, risk of harming others) in the treatment of patients with the MHAM, and in case of her absence with the PMR
  • Following the internal and external referral pathways, proritizing the treatment of complex and severe cases referred from the counsellors. This includes referrals to and case-discussions with the mhGAP-doctor.
  • Organizing the own and the mhGAP doctor’s appointments in a structured, confidential way (including written appointment notes for patients), and enabling the MHAM and/or other counsellors to take over activities, if needed.
  • Actively communicate and cooperate with the other team members, using the existing team’s communication structures and procedures (e.g. lists, groups, sheets etc.). Handover information about patients necessary for the maintenance of the quality of treatment, like tasks done/to be done in cases of days off from work, reminding patients about appointments, changes in rosters and daily routines, etc.
  • Working together with other team members to prepare/produce various mental health psychosocial education messages/topics, according to specific group needs (e.g. caretakers, children, adolescents, victims of violence, etc.).
  • Contribuiting to the data collection of the department, by accurately filling out forms and list, respecting the scheduled deadlines and ensuring a handover of forms to/from Data department. Contribuiting qualitative data and interpretation to support the monthly reports.
  • Take part in special activities like trustbuilding activities, campaigns (g. 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence), screenings (PHQ) and Psychostimulation in the ITFC-ward.
  • In accordance with the SOPs, administer transportation fees to patients who need financial support to attend face to face sessions.
  • Identify challenges and/or propose solutions or new activities, according to MSF guidelines, discussing ideas with the MHAM, in order to enhance the quality of service.
  • Contribute to the proper maintenance of the office and consultation rooms, in order to always receive the patients in a pleasant, agreeable, and confidential space.
  • In the absence of MHAM, ensure coverage of the MH-department in the daily medical morning meeting.­­­­
Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Specific Requirements:

Gender:

Essential: female candidates only!

Education:

-  Essential: Bachelor’s degree in psychology.

- Desirable: Master’s degree in clinical psychology or/and psychotherapy.

Experience:

Essential: 2 years’ experience minimum as a psychologist.

Desirable: previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s in developing countries.

-  Desirable: experience in a psychiatric department

Languages:

Essential: Fluency in both English and Arabic,

Kurdish and Turkmani is desirable.
