Green Livelihoods Specialist – Ninewa

Job Description:

JOB PURPOSE 

The Green Livelihoods Specialist will be responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing sustainable livelihood interventions under the “Advancing Peace and Stability in Sinjar” project in Qahtaniyah, Ninewa Governorate. The role focuses on promoting environmentally sustainable economic recovery through vocational training, business support, and green entrepreneurship initiatives tailored to the local market. The Specialist will ensure that livelihood activities are inclusive, conflict-sensitive, and aligned with the principles of environmental sustainability and social cohesion.

The Green Livelihoods Specialist will work closely with local stakeholders, vocational training providers, and community groups to deliver certified training programs, facilitate access to business grants, and promote the integration of renewable energy and eco-friendly practices in supported businesses. The role also includes mentoring beneficiaries, monitoring business plan implementation, and ensuring compliance with donor and organizational standards. This position contributes directly to the socioeconomic recovery and resilience of conflict-affected populations, including youth, women, returnees, and persons with disabilities. 
 

Key Responsibilities

Design and Implementation of Green Livelihoods Interventions

  • Develop and oversee vocational training programs aligned with local market needs and green economy principles.
  • Coordinate with training providers to ensure certification and quality standards.
  • Promote integration of renewable energy and eco-friendly practices in business plans.
  • Ensure gender-sensitive and inclusive approaches in all livelihood activities.

 

Business Support and Mentorship

  • Facilitate business skills development training and financial literacy sessions.
  • Support beneficiaries in developing Business Implementation Plans (BIPs).
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to ensure business sustainability and profitability.
  • Monitor grant utilization and ensure compliance with BIP milestones.

 

Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination

  • Liaise with local authorities, vocational institutions, and community groups.
  • Promote group businesses and collective ventures to enhance social cohesion.
  • Ensure alignment with UNDP and project objectives through regular coordination.  

 

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Conduct pre- and post-training assessments to measure skill acquisition and social impact.
  • Document success stories, lessons learned, and challenges.
  • Contribute to monthly and quarterly reports with accurate data and analysis.  

 

Operational and Compliance Support

  • Ensure safety standards and provision of PPE and first aid kits.
  • Support procurement planning and logistics for training and business support.
  • Ensure compliance with donor and organizational policies.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE

Required Education, training, license, registration, and/or Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, Sustainable Development, Agriculture, Economics, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is an asset.

 

Required Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in designing and implementing livelihood or economic recovery programs, preferably in post-conflict or fragile settings.
  • Proven experience in green livelihoods, renewable energy integration, or environmentally sustainable business development.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including youth, women, returnees, and persons with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with UNDP or other UN agency projects and donor-funded programming.
  • Strong background in mentoring, coaching, and capacity building of local actors and beneficiaries.

 

Required Language (s):

  • Fluency in Arabic (spoken and written).
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Required travel and/or work environment accommodations

  • The position is based in Mosul.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within Ninewa Governorate and Sinjar District, including rural and field locations.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and occasionally high-pressure environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project needs and field conditions.

 

Position's physical requirements:

  • Ability to conduct field visits in rural/agricultural settings, which may involve walking on uneven terrain and exposure to outdoor conditions.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge and/or other Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in green economy, renewable energy integration, and environmentally sustainable livelihoods.
  • Experience in implementing vocational training and business support programs in fragile or post-conflict settings.
  • Familiarity with market assessments and designing demand-driven training curricula.
  • Strong understanding of gender-sensitive programming and inclusive economic development.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, especially in vocational and small business contexts.
  • Experience working with UNDP or similar donor-funded projects, including reporting and compliance.
  • Proficiency in project cycle management, including planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multicultural teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and quality assurance.
  • Commitment to principles of conflict sensitivity, social cohesion, and community empowerment.
