Job Title: Roving Psychologist
Location: Ninewa, Erbil, Dohuk Governorates

Role Outline

The Psychologist will provide specialized psychological support to individuals with moderate to severe mental health disorders. Responsibilities include conducting one-on-one counseling, group therapy, and psychoeducation sessions. The role also involves psychological assessments, remote consultations, and referrals for advanced care. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, the Psychologist will ensure that services adhere to best practices in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). While the theoretical, practical, and clinical capacity building of other local psychologists, case workers, and social workers will ensure the sustainability of a locally empowered MHPSS response.

Key Responsibilities

Psychological and Psychosocial Support and Counseling

  • Psychological Assessments: Evaluate the mental health needs of individuals based on cognitive, behavioral, and emotional needs.
  • MHPSS Case Management: Develop and implement psychological intervention plans based on proven scientific and holistic evidence-based techniques for identified cases with moderate to severe mental disorders providing regular follow-up and prepare and submit detailed individual case reports to document progress for all cases on the caseload.
  • Individual and Group Counseling: Provide individual and group therapy sessions for individuals (women, men, children, families) identified through project activities, case workers, and referrals.
  • Tailored Interventions: Based on MHPSS assessments, customize the session topics and interventions based on the target group's identified needs and monitor progress and deliver in a very timely manner.
  • Psychological First Aid (PFA): Provide PFA in emergency situations, including remote consultations when needed.
  • Awareness and Psychoeducation: Support in providing organized individualized and group awareness and information sessions to staff and beneficiaries related to MHPSS topics identified including through addressing stigmas and increasing access to care.

Team Self-Care and Well-Being: Assist in the development and implementation of staff self-care and well-being policies and initiatives that maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality such as through peer support groups, stress management, resiliency, processing, and coping awareness, campaigns, and trainings

  • Referrals: Identify severe cases and refer them to appropriate psychological/psychiatric service providers based on approval of the organization’s duty/standards of care team.

 

 

Project Implementation and Support

  • Collaboration with Teams: Work closely with project staff, including the Case Workers, Protection, MEAL, and Quality Assurance teams, to ensure the delivery of quality MHPSS services, Staff Self-Care, and adherence to context sensitivities.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Delivery theoretical, practical, and clinical capacity building through training, coaching, and mentoring to other local psychologists, case workers, and social workers. 
  • Policy and Procedures: Strengthen, design, and update organizational Standards/Duty of Case and MHPSS SoPs, guidelines, and procedural manuals and policies and technical forms including intake forms, session plans, and follow-up forms for children and their families.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely reporting, including weekly and monthly reports on activities, progress, and beneficiary outcomes. Produce analytical trend and response reports, case studies and maintain organized data-protected confidential and secure records of case documentation.
  • Program Monitoring: Engage psychometric assessments and contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of MHPSS services, ensuring activities are tracked based on established indicator tracking metrics and feedback and accountability mechanisms are in place.
  • Safeguarding: WRO teams are expected to uphold the principles of Do No Harm and values of Integrity, Service, Accountability, and Equality as outlined in the WRO Code of Conduct.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Advanced degree in Clinical Psychology.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ professional experience in providing psychological counseling, with a focus on counseling with vulnerable conflict and violence affected populations. Experience in humanitarian contexts or working with marginalized populations is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in clinical assessment and providing MHPSS services to children, adolescents, and families.
    • Strong communication skills in Arabic and English.
    • Experience in conducting training and capacity-building activities.
    • Familiarity with MHPSS guidelines and interagency standards in humanitarian settings.
    • Ability to manage cases independently and work flexibly in a dynamic environment.
