
PURPOSE OF DIVISION:

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) has been working in Iraq for more than 20 years. IRW-Iraq was amongst the few aid agencies those were on the ground since 2003. Islamic Relief Worldwide Iraq is implementing several projects in the sector of livelihoods, WASH, Education, and Seasonal Projects.
Job Purpose:
To lead hygiene promotion activities in schools within refugee camps, focusing primarily on educating children on personal hygiene, water conservation, and waste management. Responsibilities include planning and delivering child-focused hygiene sessions, organizing school hygiene campaigns, training teachers, supporting monitoring of school rehabilitation, and reporting to the Project Office.
Terms of Reference (TOR)
Key Responsibilities:
- Planning & Implementation of Hygiene Promotion Activities
- Plan and deliver interactive, age-appropriate hygiene sessions for students, focusing on topics like personal hygiene (e.g., handwashing, dental care), water conservation, and waste disposal.
- Organize and implement hygiene and cleaning campaigns in schools to promote proper hygiene practices among students.
- Conduct a one-time orientation/training session for teachers to introduce hygiene promotion tools and how to reinforce hygiene messages in classrooms.
- Provide IEC (Information, Education, Communication) materials to support hygiene learning during the school year.
- School Rehabilitation Monitoring
- Support the Project Officer in monitoring WASH infrastructure and minor rehabilitation in schools.
- Ensure compliance with hygiene-related standards including separate gender latrines, handwashing stations, water-saving, and safe waste disposal systems.
3. Material Distribution & Needs Assessment
- Assist in the planning and supervised distribution of hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, and school materials.
- Conduct hygiene-related assessments (WASH conditions in schools, teacher/student practices).
- Identify gaps in hygiene knowledge and infrastructure for targeted intervention.
- Monitoring, Reporting & Coordination
- Collect and record data from hygiene sessions and school visits.
- Prepare daily and weekly reports with findings, challenges, and recommendations.
- Collaborate closely with school management, refugee camp authorities, and community focal points to ensure smooth and coordinated implementation.
- Participate in relevant coordination meetings and forums related to the Education and WASH sectors, as needed.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
- Bachelor's or diploma in Public Health, Nursing, Education, Environmental Science, or a related field.
Experience:
- Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in hygiene promotion, preferably in camp settings.
- Experience working with children and schools is a strong asset.
- Familiarity with PHAST and CHAST approaches is desirable.
- Experience supervising hygiene teams or volunteers is an advantage.
Languages:
- Fluency in Kurdish and Arabic. English is an asset for reporting and coordination.
Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, especially with children and educators.
- Experience in planning and supervising hygiene campaigns.
- Understanding of community mobilization and hygiene behavior change techniques.
- Ability to report clearly and manage data collection tools.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Work Conditions:
This position is based in the Country Office (CO) in Erbil, with daily travel to schools located in Darashakran and Kawergosk refugee camps.
Involves regular interaction with children, teachers, hygiene promotion staff, contractors, and camp management.
