Description

The Hotline Paralegal will support the legal team in the implementation of the legal protection hotline, established in partnership with UNHCR, to ensure timely access to legal assistance for individuals at risk of detention and deportation.

Under the supervision of the Legal Team Leader and in coordination with lawyers, the Hotline Paralegal will be responsible for receiving hotline calls, conducting initial legal triage, recording all cases in the legal platform, and facilitating timely referrals and escalation. The position aims to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of the hotline system while ensuring adherence to protection principles and data confidentiality standards.

 

Generic Duties:

  • Receive and respond to hotline calls (Korek, Asiacell, and Zain networks) in a timely, professional, and confidential manner.
  • Conduct initial intake and rapid assessment of callers to identify legal needs, particularly those related to detention and deportation risks.
  • Provide basic legal information and guidance within the defined scope of the hotline.
  • Identify urgent and high-risk cases and escalate them immediately to the Legal Team Leader and/or assigned lawyers.
  • Record all hotline calls in the legal case management platform immediately after each interaction, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data.
  • Ensure proper classification and flagging of urgent cases to facilitate timely follow-up.
  • Coordinate with the Legal Team Leader for case assignment and follow up on pending cases when required.
  • Direct cases requesting other services to the helpline.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information and ensure compliance with data protection standards.
  • Conduct proper handover of pending and urgent cases at the end of each shift to ensure continuity of service.
  • Assist in monitoring trends related to hotline calls and report any recurring protection concerns to the Legal Team Leader.
  • Support lawyers in follow-up actions when requested, particularly for urgent cases.
  • Ensure all tasks are carried out in line with key protection principles including PSEA, do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality, accountability, and need-to-know principles.
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Legal Team Leader and Legal Officer in line with the objectives of the legal team.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Education and professional experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Law
  • Students from the last year of studies and fresh graduates of law.
  • Added value members of Iraq Lawyers Syndicate.
  • Knowledge of the Iraqi legal system and legal procedures;
  • Knowledge of international protection and human rights legal standards;
  • Fluency in Arabic, added value English and Farsi (written and spoken)
