About Human Appeal

Human Appeal (HA) is a British humanitarian, non-governmental and non-profit organisation that works in 25 countries around the world since 1991. Human Appeal has been operating in Iraq since 2016. Human Appeal currently has almost 400 staff across numerous locations in Iraq, including Erbil, Duhok, Nineveh, Salah al Din, Kirkuk and Baghdad. Human Appeal Iraq’s country office is in Erbil with sub-offices in Mosul, Tikrit, Baghdad and Aana. Human Appeal has and is delivering over $50 million in humanitarian and early-recovery assistance in 2017-18. Human Appeal is working in a number of thematic sectors: primarily in protection; shelter and non-food items; food security and livelihoods; WASH; and education. Human Appeal’s main donors include UNHCR, UNOCHA, WFP and numerous other international institutional partners.

Main Job Purpose

To support Iraq Office in the organistion’s growth through  proactive management and coordination of institutional funding and strategic partnerships. The Role holder will focus on securing funds and developing relationships with high profile Institutional Donors, Trusts and Foundations and CSRs in the Iraq office.

Accountabilities

Funding landscape/ IF portfolio Planning (20%):

  • To provide periodic analysis for funding landscape in the country, new funding trends and donors’ funding priorities.
  • To support in donor mapping through gathering related donors’ intelligence and identifying new potential donors for HA humanitarian and development projects.
  • To develop donors detailed profiles related to institutional donors (i.e: UN agencies, ECHO, USAID, etc.) mainly based on their thematic and geographical preferences as well as their regulations and eligibility criteria.
  • To develop donors detailed profiles related to Trusts and Foundations as well as private sector. This includes Coca Cola, IKEA, OPEC, Bill and Melinda gates foundation, Ford foundation etc.
  • To identify new funding opportunities, in line with HA capacity and priorities, on regular basis.
  • To ensure maintaining up to date donors’ due diligence and compliance.
  • To support IF regional team in developing monthly funding landscape reports.
  • To report to IF regional team on the progress made against IF planned KPIs on monthly basis.

Networking and donors’ relationships (40%):

  • To support in identifying, approaching, and meeting new donors, INGOs, NGOs, Universities, Corporates, Research centres, Trusts and Foundations and private sector reps in the country office.
  • To support Country Director in establishing new partnerships with IF donors.
  • To support Country Director in identifying and building consortiums at the country level as well as globally.
  • To support Country Directors in conducting regular meeting with donors, local authorities and other aid actors. 
  • To ensure enhancing HA’s visibility within IF donors’ and aid sectors actors through developing quarterly impact reports, to be shared with donors locally and globally.
  • To strengthen the competitive position of the organisation through ensuring that we remain up to date with donors, funding and compliance regularities globally.  
  • To identify list of annual global funding conferences and networking events. 
  • To participate in relevant internal and external working groups, conferences and workshops.
  • To activate HA participation and membership in funding and coordination platforms.
  • To travel nationally and overseas for networking in addition to establishing an understanding for better, up-to-date programme design and proposal development.

Proposal Development and Project Designing (30%):

  • To lead on country proposals development; coordinating with other related departments, including Programmes, Finance, M&E and HR for gathering information required for CN, detailed proposal, LF and budget.
  • Submit proposals and budgets to IF regional team for review and feedback before the final submission is made to donors.
  • To gather all the relevant documents for submission to institutional donors, trusts, foundations, strategic partners etc.
  • To ensure all submissions are in line with donor guidelines, internal criteria and international standards.
  • To lead on gathering all needed documentation and information for capacity assessment and due diligence requested by IF donors. 

Grant Management and Reporting (10%):

  • To support Country team and IF regional team in submitting timely and quality narrative and financial reports.
  • To support project managers in reporting and regularly updating project monitoring tool.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Experience and Technical Competencies

  • Essential: B.S in international development of related field.
  • Desirable: Master’s degree in International development or related field
  • Sufficient experience with INGOs and high-profile institutional donors.
  • A proven track record of securing funding from high-profile institutional donors like UN Agencies, ECHO, USAID, GIZ or SIDA etc.
  • Track record of securing funding from corporates, trusts and foundation.
  • Experience in devising donor scooping reports as well as solid understanding of donors’ due diligence and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and a strong understanding of the Institutional Funding landscape.
  • Solid understanding of the local and global funding landscape.
  • Ability to identify institutional funding opportunities, and mobilising internal stakeholders to fully capitalise on these opportunities.
  • A high level of financial literacy – ability to understand and summarise financial information, develop budgets and demonstrate value for money in proposals.
  • Strong proposal development skills and familiarity with the processes of responding to funding bids/opportunities
  • Highly developed written and oral communication, negotiation, persuasion, interpersonal and networking skills that result in the production of clear and persuasive proposals and donor relations
  • Track records in developing and maintain strong working relationships with donors.
  • Strong experience in project design, project proposal development and writing.
  • Essential: MS Office, advanced excel.  A good understanding of Saleforce is desirable.
  • Fluent English is essential, and fluency in an additional language reflecting Human Appeal’s global presence (i.e. Arabic, Kurdish) is desirable
